Background: A Period of Turbulence for Bangladesh Cricket

Bangladesh Cricket has endured a succession of setbacks that have strained the organisation from many angles. The first wave of difficulty emerged when political and public unrest rippled across the nation, creating an atmosphere of uncertainty that soon spilled over into the sporting arena. In the midst of that unrest, Bangladesh Cricket found itself locked in a power struggle with the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The tension between Bangladesh Cricket and the Board of Control for Cricket in India escalated to the point where Bangladesh Cricket’s star bowler Mustafizur Rahman was removed from a premier Indian league competition.

The repercussions continued to mount. Bangladesh Cricket made the decision to withdraw from a major international T20 tournament, a move that was followed by an open protest from several national team members who voiced dissatisfaction with Bangladesh Cricket’s governance. At the same time, plans for the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) failed to secure sponsorship and were consequently postponed, leaving the women’s cricket programme without a launch platform.

All of these developments created a volatile environment in which Bangladesh Cricket was forced to operate, setting the stage for the next, more serious challenge – allegations of match manipulation that threatened the very integrity of the sport within the country.

Match‑Fixing Incident at the CJKS Talent Cup

The latest scandal unfolded during a recent edition of the CJKS Talent Cup, a tournament overseen by the local sports committee Chattogram Jila Krira Sangshta. The event featured a T20 clash between the clubs Bakalia Ekadosh and Crescent Club. In that match, Bangladesh Cricket officials discovered that seven members of the Bakalia Ekadosh squad had engaged in conduct that violated the spirit of the game.

The seven players – Sakib Hossain, Obaidul Alam, Omar Faruk, Tin Dhar, Mahir Anwar, Mohammad Iqbal and Nazmul Islam – were observed executing a bizarre sequence of dismissals that raised immediate suspicion. According to the investigation conducted by Chattogram Jila Krira Sangshta, the seven players deliberately arranged to get themselves out, an action that was interpreted as an intentional manipulation of the match result.

Following a thorough review of the evidence, Chattogram Jila Krira Sangshta concluded that the conduct of the seven players constituted a gross breach of the ethical standards upheld by Bangladesh Cricket. As a result, each of the seven players received a career‑ending ban from all domestic competitions governed by Bangladesh Cricket.

In addition to the player sanctions, the investigation identified coach Aminul Haque as a participant in the illicit scheme. Coach Aminul Haque was found to have facilitated or otherwise supported the actions of the seven players. Consequently, Chattogram Jila Krira Sangshta imposed the strictest disciplinary measure on coach Aminul Haque, banning coach Aminul Haque from any involvement in cricket‑related activities for a period of five years.

Chattogram Jila Krira Sangshta formally communicated its decision to Bangladesh Cricket, requesting that Bangladesh Cricket enforce the bans across all domestic leagues nationwide and demonstrate a zero‑tolerance stance toward match manipulation within the Chittagong region.

Earlier Match‑Fixing Allegations in the Bangladesh Premier League

The controversy surrounding match fixing is not confined to the CJKS Talent Cup. In the aftermath of the most recent Bangladesh Premier League season, Bangladesh Cricket faced additional accusations involving senior officials. Director Mukhlesur Rahman Shamim, who serves Bangladesh Cricket’s Rajshahi Division, was alleged to have taken part in discussions related to fixing matches within the Bangladesh Premier League.

These allegations emerged after a local journalist released an investigative video that purported to show Director Mukhlesur Rahman Shamim arranging meetings with spotters in a hotel located in Sylhet. The footage suggested that Director Mukhlesur Rahman Shamim was coordinating with individuals who provided inside information to influence match outcomes. The same investigative report also implicated two representatives of the franchise Noakhali Express, indicating that the team’s personnel may have been involved in illicit activities aimed at altering the results of Bangladesh Premier League matches.

This episode added to an already tarnished reputation for Bangladesh Cricket on the world stage. A previous investigation into the Bangladesh Premier League had resulted in ten cricketers – including six members of the national team and two overseas professionals – being flagged by the Anti‑Corruption Unit for potential involvement in fixing across eight separate matches.

Impact on Bangladesh Cricket’s Performance and Future Outlook

Beyond the administrative and ethical challenges, Bangladesh Cricket’s on‑field performance has also suffered. In the most recent World Test Championship cycle, Bangladesh Cricket finds itself positioned in the lower half of the table, reflecting a dip in results during the test format. Limited‑overs fixtures leading up to the upcoming World Cup have been scarce, further restricting Bangladesh Cricket’s opportunities to build momentum.

Nevertheless, Bangladesh Cricket achieved a notable victory in an ODI series against Pakistan, a win that provided a brief respite from the series of setbacks. Building on that success, Bangladesh Cricket is scheduled to embark on a demanding series of contests against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa over the course of the next twelve months. These encounters are expected to serve as a benchmark for Bangladesh Cricket’s ability to recover and re‑establish competitiveness on the global stage.

In parallel with the on‑field agenda, Bangladesh Cricket is moving forward with plans for the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League season. In an effort to repair strained relations with the neighbouring cricket board, Bangladesh Cricket has openly extended an invitation to leading Indian women cricketers, hoping that their participation will foster goodwill and strengthen diplomatic ties that are essential for Bangladesh Cricket’s sustained presence in international cricket.
