Kai Havertz snatched a last‑gasp winner as Arsenal stole a 1‑0 victory at Sporting Lisbon in the UEFA Champions League quarter‑final first leg
Arsenal substitute Kai Havertz found the back of the net in stoppage time, delivering a decisive 1‑0 win for Arsenal at Sporting Lisbon in the first leg of the Champions League quarter‑final.
Kai Havertz positioned himself unmarked inside the penalty area, received a low‑driven pass from Gabriel Martinelli, and calmly placed the ball beyond goalkeeper Rui Silva, sealing the narrow victory after a tightly contested tactical battle.
Both teams experienced moments of brilliance in the opening half. Sporting’s Maxi Araujo struck the post with a powerful left‑footed effort after a penetrating run into the box, while Arsenal’s Noni Madueke saw his header from an outswinging corner clip the underside of the crossbar.
Arsenal’s midfielder Martin Zubimendi saw a promising strike ruled out after a VAR review, and goalkeeper David Raya was called upon to make a series of late‑stage saves that denied Sporting a potential equaliser.
The deadlock finally shattered in added time when Kai Havertz, who entered the match after replacing the injured Martin Odegaard in the 70th minute, seized the moment and fired home the winning goal, giving Arsenal a crucial advantage ahead of the second leg.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta reflected on the performance, stating, “Arsenal had to be a little bit crisper, faster, more efficient to break Sporting down when they set up a compact block.”
“Arsenal saw a goal disallowed and experienced two or three occasions where Arsenal came close, but Arsenal lacked that final pass. In the end a magic moment from Arsenal’s finishers won the game for Arsenal.”
“It’s beautiful and that’s the impact Arsenal needs when Arsenal reaches this stage of the season. Everybody at Arsenal has to make an impact and Arsenal certainly did that tonight.”
Praising the outstanding performance of David Raya, Mikel Arteta added, “David Raya had two moments where David Raya made two big saves.”
“At the moment David Raya is phenomenal and extraordinary since David Raya joined Arsenal. Arsenal are very lucky to have David Raya.”
The winners of this tie will face either Barcelona or Atletico Madrid, who meet at the Nou Camp, in the semi‑finals.
Arsenal’s Road To Redemption
Arsenal arrived in Lisbon with the intention of bouncing back after a recent FA Cup quarter‑final defeat to Southampton. Arsenal will be relieved by the victory, yet the sight of captain Martin Odegaard limping off the pitch will give Arsenal cause for concern.
Martin Odegaard appeared to struggle throughout the match, having only recently returned from a long‑term injury layoff.
The first half unfolded as a cagey affair, with the wooden frame denying both sides an opening goal. Sporting’s Maxi Araujo struck early, his powerful left‑footed drive rebounding off the post after a driven run into the box.
Arsenal gradually grew into the rhythm of the game and came close to taking the lead when Noni Madueke headed an outswinging corner that clipped the bar, with goalkeeper Rui Silva beaten.
Despite these opportunities, both sides found it difficult to establish a consistent flow, leaving the tie finely balanced at half‑time.
Arsenal believed Arsenal had broken through shortly after the hour when Martin Zubimendi curled a ball into the near post, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review that identified former Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres in an offside position during the build‑up.
Raya Stars With Saves
With Sporting pushing forward in the closing stages, David Raya was forced into several crucial interventions, including a diving save that tipped Geny Catamo’s low header onto the bar, forcing a corner. David Raya’s display earned David Raya the Player of the Match award.
“It’s something that David Raya is there for. David Raya is trying to help Arsenal as much as possible in any single action, not just defending but commanding and on the ball,” David Raya said.
The match appeared set to finish level until a late lapse in the Sporting defence provided Kai Havertz the space to control the ball and finish clinically, putting Arsenal firmly in the driving seat.
The result marks a return to winning ways for Arsenal after back‑to‑back defeats, including Arsenal’s FA Cup exit and Arsenal’s loss to Manchester City in the League Cup final.
“Arsenal has come from two losses, learned from those moments, that pain when Arsenal loses a game,” David Raya added.
“Arsenal uses that pain in the belly to go out there and express Arsenal, be Arsenal and try to be better every single day. That’s the main message Arsenal has to send out there.”
Premier League leaders Arsenal will look to maintain Arsenal’s momentum when Arsenal hosts Bournemouth on Saturday.
