Beer, Dance And DJ On The Ganga: Internet Slams Men For Turning Holy River Into A Floating Party Hub

A viral clip reveals men drinking and dancing to a DJ on boats allegedly in the middle of the Ganga River, triggering a debate on public boozing and sanctity
Varanasi, the spiritual heart of India, is currently at the center of a heated digital debate after a viral video surfaced showing a group of men turning the holy Ganges into a party hub. The clip, shared on X by Piyush Rai, has sent shockwaves through social media, leading many to question: Has the sanctity of the Ganga been compromised for a “good time"?
The footage captures a scene far removed from the usual evening Aarti. In the video, a group of men can be seen purportedly consuming beer on a boat. The party didn’t stop at drinks; a second boat, equipped with a full DJ setup, blasted loud music as the men danced across the water.
As per reports, Varanasi Police has responded swiftly, stating that a probe has been initiated to identify the individuals seen in the video and verify the circumstances under which the incident took place. The video has triggered a wave of polarising comments, highlighting a larger struggle with public drinking and civic discipline in India.
Some netizens pointed out that this is a symptom of a larger national habit. “It happens everywhere in India… from parks to trains. According to experience, about 30% of those driving post 11 PM are boozed," one user commented, suggesting that public drinking has become an unchecked norm.
Others are demanding stricter infrastructure. There is a growing call for mandatory CCTV on all boats to monitor not just drinking, but also littering. “Punish those people. We are made to be busy and divided by making non-issues as issues," another user added, urging the focus to shift back to civic pride and environmental protection.
